Red 5ive is a garage band with a unique sound and a tipical story. Back in 97' band leader Donald Singleton played some songs to be considered for the worship band at Harbor Light Church in Costa Mesa, California. Drummer Tom Kent and bassist Greg Pate suggested that the songs were not for the worship team. "They seemed to like the songs" said Donald,"so I asked if they would form a band with me."
Once they had a couple of rehearsals under their belt it was clear that Red 5ive was ready for some small gigs. After the first gig at a christian singles function Red 5ive was on fire. The next gig came only a few days later. The band was happy, playing was fun and life was good. The next gig went better than the first. Red 5ive was a hit with the audience.
Donald introduced some new songs at the next rehearsal, but everything came to grinding halt.
Donald asked a friend to join the band as lead guitarist. "I wanted Rich to play my leads and some rhythm so I could concentrate on singing." Rich accepted the spot on lead guitar and did well but a busy work schedule and three full sets of songs to learn were too much. Soon Donald was back on lead guitar and getting frustrated.
Over the next five years Red 5ive went through many personnel changes and almost no gigs. "It has become like a solo act. I don't want that. I'm doing everything I can to keep the band vibe going."
In 2005 Red 5ive struck gold. "Daren Boyle is by far the best lead guitar player I ever had. He is like Slash and Clapton all wrapped into one." Daren and drummer Christian Gaddis were made for each other. Christian had a very Bonham/Aldridge old school drummer style which dovetailed perfectly with Darens' "Slash" sensibilities. Rehearsals gave way to extended jams and giant smiles. People from around the complex were sneaking in to listen. There was magic happening for Red 5ive again as they started work on the "Runaway" CD.
Then came Pat. The new bassist and beginning of the end for the "Runaway" sessions. No one ever even knew his last name. He was an okay bassist who though he knew everything. Bassists were hard to find so Red 5ive kept Pat much longer than they should have. But that is not what put the nail in the coffin for "Runaway". "We had a gig up in Santa Ana with Neon Cross. Pat never showed up so we played the show with no bass." The next rehearsal was like a cemitary. After barely playing the first half of the rehearsal Pat left with no explanation. At the next rehearsal he showed up and wanted to change all the music. After a long arguement Pat was asked to leave.
Daren got a call from Hollywood to come and play for an ex-Guns N' Roses member who had started a new band. Daren aproached Donald and Christian with the news. "What could we say. This was the oportunity of a lifetime. We told him that if he didn't go for it we would have to beat him. He got that gig and now he's with Junkies and Thieves. They rock by the way."
Donald has switched to bass and is now looking for a completly new set of musicians. The story of Red 5ive continues...
